TLDR: Netflix... News?

Netflix… News?
What happened: Semafor reported last week that Netflix purchased a pilot television series from The Daily Beast, which will cover timely news topics and culturally defining events via 30-minute episodes. The news follows Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos hinting back in April that another format of non-traditional streamer content might pop up on the platform soon: video podcasts.
Netflix isn’t the only streaming platform experimenting with news-style content, either; Amazon is reportedly exploring a bigger investment in news programs after its Election Night special.
Between the lines: As YouTube continues to dominate the digital video landscape, streaming platforms are expanding beyond traditional television and film offerings in an attempt to command more audience attention. With news as the latest push, comms teams may find themselves pitching Hollywood studios and streaming giants next.
Only time will tell whether or not that will fall under a communicator's responsibilities, but it would be yet another example of the expanding focus of the role as the media and information environment continues to look far different than even just a few years ago.
